Google's AI Overviews Stumble in a Dust Storm

Howdy partner, them AI tools are like trusty steeds claimin’ to help ya research, code, summarize, and gather knowledge from all corners. But sometimes, even the sharpest horses stumble. Take Google’s AI Overviews, for instance. It couldn’t even figure out what year it is.

A bunch of folks lately have been sayin’ that when they asked Google the current year, that contraption told ’em it was 2024. Well, this old cowboy asked on Thursday mornin’ if it was already 2025, and wouldn’t ya know it, got the same confounded answer.

Google finally fixed that pesky bug late Thursday.

Google's Response

When questioned why this mix-up happened, Google didn’t give no specific reason, just tipped their hat sayin’ they’re workin’ on an update to dodge such hiccups down the trail.

“Just like a cowboy keeps improvin' his skills, we’re constantly mendin’ and updatin’ our systems. Most of the AI Overviews offer mighty fine, helpful information, and we’re workin’ hard to wrangle this type of issue,” a Google spokesperson declared.

Blunders in the Dust

Google’s been fine-tunin’ AI Overviews for a spell now, but it’s stumbled a time or two – from suggestin' folks eat “one small rock per day” for vitamins, to sayin’ ya should add glue to make cheese stick to a pizza. When it launched over yonder in Hindi in India, TechCrunch saw its answers were as twisted as a rattlesnake in a dust storm.

Roundin’ Up Users

In recent weeks, Google honcho Sundar Pichai’s been talkin’ up the numbers for AI Overviews, claimin’ it’s now in the hands of 1.5 billion users across more than 100 countries. He added that in lands like the U.S. and India, this here feature is stokin' over 10% of search engine usage for related queries. They’re tyin’ their hopes to gettin' folks to use them AI-powered search and Q&A features more and more.
